Installation and updates

5

Windows or my antivirus shows a warning?

The executable is not signed yet: Windows SmartScreen or some antivirus programs may scan it or show a warning. The file name never changes: a single exception in your antivirus is enough for all versions.

What are the requirements?

64-bit Windows 10 or 11, and Ollama installed on your machine or access to an Ollama server. Lucania installs for your Windows account, in %LOCALAPPDATA%\Programs\Lucania, with no administrator permission.

See the Download page

Setup or Update: which one do I download?

Lucania-Setup.exe is for the first installation. If Lucania is already installed, it points you to the update and closes. Lucania-Update.exe updates: it closes Lucania if it is running, replaces the files and keeps your conversations. It refuses to run if Lucania is not installed.

See the Download page

I have an old version in Program Files. What do I do?

The update does not touch it. Run the setup once: it warns you, then installs in the new location, and your conversations are kept. To remove the old version, delete the C:\Program Files\Lucania folder (Windows asks for permission). Do not uninstall it from Settings > Apps: the old uninstaller would also erase your conversations, which are shared with the new installation.

How do I uninstall or start from scratch?

In Lucania, Settings > About > Uninstall Lucania, or from Windows Settings > Apps. Warning: uninstalling also deletes your conversations and settings, with no way back. To start from scratch, uninstall, then run the setup again.

Data and privacy

3

Where is my data?

In a SQLite database on your computer: %APPDATA%\com.lucania.desktop\data\app.db (the cache is in %LOCALAPPDATA%\com.lucania.desktop). This folder is kept during updates and deleted when you uninstall.

Do my conversations go to the cloud?

No. Your conversations stay on your machine. Lucania sends nothing, except to your own Ollama servers.

Do I need an Internet connection?

Not to chat with a model running on your machine: everything happens locally. You need one to download Lucania and Ollama models, and to reach a remote server.

Ollama and models

3

Do I need to install Ollama?

Yes, or have access to an Ollama server. Lucania is the chat interface, Ollama runs the models, on this machine or on another one.

How do I add a connection and pick a model?

Open Settings, then Connections > Add a connection, and choose "On this computer" or "On another machine". Lucania tests the connection and detects the installed models; the advanced options let you add some by hand, for example llama3.2:3b. Then go back to the chat, pick a model and start typing. You can save several connections and turn them on one by one.

The connection fails. What should I check?

Local connection: start Ollama and try again, or add the connection and start Ollama later. Remote server: check that the tunnel is up. Custom address: check the address and that the server is running.

Remote server and WireGuard

5

How do I use a remote Ollama server?

Connect to the server through a WireGuard VPN that you manage, then add it as a connection in Settings: choose "On another machine" and enter the server address inside the tunnel, for example 10.0.0.2. Lucania adds port 11434 on its own. The addresses in the guide are examples: use the ones from your tunnel.

How do I open Ollama to the tunnel?

By default, Ollama only listens on 127.0.0.1. On Windows, create the system environment variable OLLAMA_HOST with the value 0.0.0.0, then quit and restart Ollama. On Linux with systemd, run sudo systemctl edit ollama, add the line Environment="OLLAMA_HOST=0.0.0.0" under [Service], then sudo systemctl daemon-reload && sudo systemctl restart ollama.

Which port do I open in the firewall?

Port 11434, only from the tunnel interface or address range, for example 10.0.0.0/24. Never expose this port to the Internet: Ollama has no authentication, and the WireGuard tunnel is the only way in.

I get "timed out" or "connection refused".

"Timed out" means the tunnel is down or the firewall blocks port 11434. "Connection refused" means OLLAMA_HOST is not set, or Ollama was not restarted. To test from the client, run curl http://10.0.0.2:11434/api/tags: a JSON response listing the models confirms that everything works.

Can I shut the server down remotely?

Yes, if you run a small program on the remote machine that receives an HTTP request. In Settings > Remote shutdown, enable shutdown for the connection, then enter the program URL, the HTTP method and the secret token. A "Shut down" button appears in the sidebar. Lucania asks for confirmation: the machine stops completely and Ollama stays unreachable until it restarts.

Using Lucania

4

What is thinking mode for?

It makes the model think before it answers. You turn it on or off per conversation with the Thinking button in the message box, and the thinking time shows in the conversation.

How do I organize my conversations?

Create folders and drag your conversations into them. You can also pin, rename or move conversations to a folder, and customize a folder's color and icon. Conversations are grouped by date. Deleting a folder keeps its conversations.

Does Lucania have a memory?

Yes, in Settings > Memory. Each model has its own: its facts are given to it at the start of every conversation. You add, edit and delete them yourself (500 characters maximum per fact), and you can let the model suggest facts to remember. Everything stays on your computer. The repository README still lists this feature as in development.

Which themes and languages?

Lucania offers 13 themes and an interface in French and English. You pick them in Settings > Appearance, and the choice is saved on the device.

Project and license

2

Is Lucania free and open source?

Yes. The code is published on GitHub under the MIT license, and the download is free.

Is there a web version, or one for another system?

The desktop app is for 64-bit Windows 10 and 11. The repository also contains a web version, which you start with npm run dev (Node 24 required) and open at http://localhost:4748. The README names no other platform.
